I have unleashed a new passion/obsession/fetish – for the perfect crust and crumb. Well, as every chef knows – your bread is only as good as the bread knife you use to cut it – or something like that! To round out the gift I was given a beautiful Global bread knife – and most important to remember – I gave Krissy and Ludo a penny – don’t want to cut the relationship and superstitious as I am I’ll not risk this one! So if you give a knife, have them give you a penny! Although the above song is gradually becoming the more accepted song for singing at birthdays in Spain, the Spanish do have a song of their own which has traditionally been sung at birthdays and is still very much in use to-day. Having just passed my own last month, I started thinking about this topic. Besides the usual "Happy Birthday to you..." song traditionally sung to people celebrating B-days, are there any other ones that have become ritual in your area? In 1924, businessman Robert Coleman published 'Good Morning to All' in a songbook, including the Happy Birthday variation of the lyrics as a second verse. He republished this second verse under the title 'Happy Birthday' in The American Hymnal in 1933, and it was also published in Children's Praise and Worship in 1928, though not by Coleman. While retaining the melody Patty one day changed the lyrics, replacing them with the now well-known words of 'Happy Birthday To You'. They were to be sung on the birthday of every pupil. To put her idea into practice, she published, jointly with her sister, Song Stories for the Kindergarten and Primary Schools in 1893. Patty wrote the words and Mildred set them to music. Of all the songs in the collection, their favourite was 'Good Morning To All'. It was intended to be sung at the beginning of every school day: Good morning to you, When I was at school there was probably not much more exciting than going to the zoo, I used to really look forward to trips to Drusillas and to Marwell Zoo. I followed the stereotype of an animal-obsessed girl, including a line in pets (I'm not very good at keeping hamsters or goldfish alive, don't ask me to pet-sit), horse-riding lessons (I became a master in falling off - in fact so much so they used me to help break-in the newly broken-in horses to riding in a school!), membership to the RSPCA and a large Sylvanian Family collection. Well Kit's not been to a proper zoo yet, and London has one, so to celebrate my turn of the decades wedragged Nanny and Grandadthere! Lost it since then, but somebody could write another. (To write a round, you leave out the fourth and seventh notes of the scale.) The original "Happy Birthday" is getting well worn.

After an off-key "Happy Birthday" (and the annoying modern-Greenwich additional verses "Are you one? Are you two?") Ever struggled with what to give someone for a birthday present? Well struggle no more. Having just received some of the best and most inspired birthday presents ever I thought I’d share a few ideas.

There's also a traditional Spanish version with it's own melody. If some has a link to a midi, I wouldn't mind at all. It's been over a decade since I heard it. Patty was convinced that for a school to be truly successful, it had to be a cheerful place. Only a joyful and relaxed atmosphere could bring our the best from teachers and pupils. Most of all, Patty believed in teaching by song.Originally published in Song Stories for the Kindergarten. Chicago: Clayton F. Summy Co. 1896. as cited by Snyder, Agnes (1972). It is traditional, among English-speakers, that at a birthday party, the song "Happy Birthday to You" be sung to the birthday person by the other guests celebrating the birthday, often when presented with a birthday cake. After the song is sung, party guests sometimes add wishes like "and many more!" expressing the hope that the birthday person will enjoy a long life. In the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, immediately after "Happy Birthday" has been sung, it is traditional for one of the guests to lead with " Hip hip ..." and then for all of the other guests to join in and say "... hooray!" [21] This cheer normally is given three times in a row. In the wake of their success, the lawyers involved in the "Happy Birthday" lawsuit filed similar lawsuits regarding " We Shall Overcome" [55] and " This Land Is Your Land". [56] Public performances

A couple of weeks ago I was continuing my usual post-Paris-moan about not being able to find great bread in LA when Ludo handed me a book about bread baking – Flour Water Salt Yeast by Ken Forkish. I love a challenge and so jumped straight in, carefully following the recipes and making batch after batch of delicious crunchy fresh bread.Candles spelling "happy birthday", one of many types of birthday cake decorations that accompany this song Happy Birthday To You' was also, in fact, the first song to be sung in space (by a human, at least). On March 8, 1969, the astronauts on Apollo IX sang it to celebrate the birthday of Christopher Kraft, at that time director of NASA space operations. An instant success, the song soon spread beyond the confines of the school. Its very simplicity and directness appealed to people of all ages. I was totally surprised and touched last night at my birthday dinner with my girlfriends when Waylynn Lucas gave me a beautiful 3 tiered strawberry cake she had made. Waylynn has started making birthday cakes at her shop fonuts as well as ice cream and her classic fonuts. Waylynn says “I have this weird need to always make sure anybody in my life has a b-day cake!” It was delicious, thoughtful and so unexpected – perhaps that old cliché is really true – it’s the thought that counts – especially when it comes in the form of a pink cake with candles. Thank you Waylynn! In 2010, the Western classical music conductor Zubin Mehta conducted the orchestra to play variations of "Happy Birthday" in the styles of various Western classical music composers including Wagner, Bach, Mozart and Beethoven, and in the Viennese, New Orleans and Hungarian composition styles.
